No Charges Filed Against Mother of Boy Who Fell into Gorilla Exhibit at Cincinnati Zoo

Prosecutor says no charges against mother of boy who entered zoo exhibit, resulting in Harambe, the gorilla's shooting death.

CINCINNATI — Hamilton County prosecutor, Joseph Deters says no charges will be filed against the mother of a 3-year-old boy who got into the Cincinnati Zoo's gorilla exhibit, which led to the fatal shooting of Harambe, an endangered gorilla.

"It could have been a lot worse," Deters said in a Monday afternoon press briefing.

Deters explained that the mother of the boy did not act in a way that presented harm to her child. She was being attentive to three other children when her 3-year-old "scampered off," he said.

Deters added that in order for charges to be filed, parents must have recklessly created a substantial risk to the child.

"Had she been in the bathroom smoking crack and letting her kids run around the zoo, that would be a different story," Deters said.
