Congressional Candidate Barred From Re-Enlisting In Air Force, Caught In Another Lie About His Military Service

1) Cleveland-area congressional candidate J.R. Majewski — whose campaign plays up his military experience — was demoted, punished and barred from re-enlisting in the Air Force because he drove drunk on Kadena Air Base in Japan in September 2001, according to his military records. Majewski's campaign claimed he was demoted for a "brawl" in an Air Force dormitory. The candidate has no explanation for why his story doesn't match government records.

  • Official record: "When you decided to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after indulging in intoxicating liquor you brought discredit upon yourself, 733rd Air Mobility Squadron, and the Air Force," the disciplinary records state. "Further misconduct by you of any type will not be tolerated." The files show Majewski was assigned to janitorial duties at times.
  • Other falsehoods: This is not the first time Majewski has made false claims about his military record. Majewski claimed to be deployed to a combat zone in Afghanistan, but military records show he was never in combat and was deployed to an air base in Qatar, far from the fighting, where he loaded and unloaded planes.
  • E-2 rank: Majewski, now 42, joined the Air Force at the age of 20 and left the service after four years one rank above entry level.
  • The race: Majewski, a Republican from Toledo, is running against U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur in the 9th Congressional District, which stretches along Lake Erie from Toledo to Cleveland. She has held office since 1983.

2) Mekenna Vanyo, 16, of Brunswick, currently a U.S. kickboxing champ, will compete in the 2022 Junior World Championships in Europe. Her family is raising money for her trip to Italy to compete. The championship tournament runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 9. Mekenna has been training since she was 3 years old. Her dad, Mark Vanyo, is her coach and runs Vanyo Martial Arts in Strongsville. “I believe in myself that I can be the gold medalist,” Mekenna said.

3) Seems like Myles Garrett and Ricky Bobby have something in common — they wanna go fast! The Browns defensive end has been stopped for speeding six times in the last five years, with multiple citations for driving faster than 100 miles an hour. In one 24-hour period last year, Garrett was stopped twice for speeding, once for 120 mph and again for 105 mph. Garrett was fined for every infraction. On Monday, Garrett lost control of his Porsche 911 while driving home from practice in Berea and flipped his car several times. He hurt his shoulder, bicep and hand.

4) Has the Warden's Widow scared the bejeebers out of you? The character from Mansfield's Blood Prison has developed a cult following, racking up 870,000 TikTok fans and counting. Andrea, the actress who plays her, stands 6 feet, 7 inches tall and can unleash a blood-curdling scream. She says the role has changed her life. Blood Prison, staged at the Ohio State Reformatory, is just one of 23 scary haunts across Northeast Ohio you can visit to entertain yourself and friends this Halloween season. The list was compiled by Paris Wolfe.

5) Neil Filous, 46, scrawled racist threats on his housemate's blanket with black spray paint after breaking into the man's room with a broken baseball bat, according to Cleveland police, then he made racist comments to corrections officers on his way to jail. Filous was arrested Sunday in his Old Brooklyn residence. He's charged with burglary and is due in court Thursday.
