Cleveland Cop Sues Rookie Partner For 'Blindly' Shooting Her

1) A Cleveland police officer is suing her partner for wounds she suffered when the rookie "blindly" fired his weapon into the air as he ran from an armed man. The shot struck Jennifer Kilnapp in the arm and the bullet fragmented in her chest, coming to rest near her spine, as her partner ran down stairs away from the gunman in July 2020. The department didn't tell Kilnapp that her partner shot her until a year later.

2) Olmsted Falls native Katie Nageotte won a gold medal in women's pole vault at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon with a best-in-the-world height for the year. Nageotte cleared 4.85 meters, about 15.9 feet, on her best vault. Americans won nine medals. Nageotte won a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the pole vault with a 4.9 meter vault.

3) Claes Oldenburg, co-creator of the controversial "Free Stamp" sculpture in Cleveland's Willard Park, died Monday in New York. He was 93. Free Stamp, dedicated in 1991, stands as a monument to the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans. Amoco (owner of Standard Oil of Ohio, aka Sohio) commissioned the 70,000-pound sculpture in 1985. The piece sat in a warehouse for five years before Mayor George Voinovich found a spot for it in Willard Park.

4) The iconic smokestacks of a century-old power plant in Avon Lake would be preserved in a redevelopment plan to be presented to the public Tuesday. The plant was shut down in 2021 and the 131-acre property was acquired by the Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group LLC. "The vision for the site will connect the City of Avon Lake back to the shorelines of Lake Erie," said Andre Brumfield, board director of the architecture design firm Gensler.
5) Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb vowed to work with the City Council to create a $100,000 fund to help city residents who travel out of state for abortions. The fund would pay for lodging and travel costs. Cleveland prosecutors have previously said they will not prosecute abortion-ban violations. “As we hear about more and more extreme measures being considered at the state level, my administration will continue to look at all possible options – executive, administrative, legislative and from the bully pulpit,” Bibb said. “Reproductive rights are human rights, and I am committed to protecting those rights to the maximum extent that I can.”
