Here are the top three stories today in Cleveland:
- Ohio Supreme Court justices made a one-sentence dismissal in the appeal case that challenged Gov. Mike DeWine's power to end federal pandemic employment benefits in 2021. The case was ruled moot, but Attorney Marc Dann, representing the unemployed, said he would continue to pursue his case and attempt to restore the pandemic unemployment benefits, offering an additional $300 per week. (cleveland.com)
- Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $20 million to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD). The donation is the largest private donation the district has received in the last 20 years. CMSD plans on using the funds in five installments for student and teacher expenditures, such as college visits, teacher tuition and training, athletic equipment, musical instruments, and science labs. - A man was sentenced to seven years in prison for holding a U.S. Postal Service worker at gunpoint in 2021. Quentell Allen, 27, approached the worker while delivering mail, pointed a pistol at the carrier's head, and demanded the vehicle. He pulled the worker from their vehicle, and then drove away and intentionally crashed the vehicle into another car. (WJW FOX 8 News Cleveland)
