Giant Eagle Bringing Flashfood App To All Its Stores Here

1) Giant Eagle is bringing Flashfood — an app that helps shoppers find and buy discounted meat, yogurt and other perishable foods close to their expiration date — to all of its 173 Giant Eagle and Market District stores. Early tests here helped save thousands of pounds of food from going to waste and helps shoppers save on their grocery bill. The app will be available in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

2) Rebecca Maurer, a freshman on the Cleveland City Council, is setting the standard for transparency, reports Sam Allard for Cleveland Scene. Her ward office released data that shows how she spends her day — as well as the sheer volume of constituent calls she receives seeking city services — and recommendations for how City Hall could better respond to residents' needs. She's six months into her four-year term.

3) Brycen Gray, a St. Edward High School student, ended his own life in 2021 as he suffered depression brought on by a bout of COVID-19. The U.S. House this week passed Brycen Gray and Ben Price COVID-19 Neurological Impact Act on a bipartisan 350-69 vote. Research funded by the bill, sponsored by Republican Ohio Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, could bring us closer to learning how the coronavirus affects the brain. U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan voted against the Brycen Gray bill.
4) The street artist known as Birdcap, aka Michael Roy, is in Cleveland all week to paint an abstract mural on Stella Maris, the addiction and mental health treatment service, in the Flats West Bank. Graffiti HeArt brought him to town. Graffiti HeArt is responsible for more than 40 public murals in Northeast Ohio and raised more than $100,000 in scholarships for high school students at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

5) The Blossom Festival Chorus has been scrubbed from the Cleveland Orchestra's Aug. 7 show at Blossom Music Center because several chorus members have COVID-19. They planned to perform Beethoven's Ode to Joy / "Choral" Symphony No. 9. The event will go on without the chorus, and the program will change.
