Kidney Donor Became Transplant Recipient

Sixteen years ago, Maggie Wallison donated one of her kidneys to her husband, Joe, whose kidneys failed because of juvenile diabetes complications. At the time, she wondered what might happen if her own remaining kidney gave out on her.

  • The Cleveland Clinic doctors who transplanted her kidney into her husband reassured her. In 2019, the unthinkable happened. A rare disease destroyed Maggie's kidney, and she would need a transplant.
  • “I was in disbelief," she said. "I went from perfectly healthy to being really sick overnight."

The Cleveland Clinic shared her story this weekend in recognition of Donate Life Month.

'Unbelievably Disappointed In My Beloved Browns'

ICYMI, on Sunday we shared the results of our Cleveland Browns Fan Poll. Almost half of the 2,000-plus respondents told us the Browns lost them as a fan because of the Deshaun Watson trade. Many believe Baker Mayfield, despite his brashness and flaws, got a raw deal. Here are a few of the comments Cleveland Daily readers shared:

  • LeAnn O., Lakewood: "Big mistake. HUGE mistake. The Browns just proved how desperate they are. All their talk about 'character' in players — and then you get THIS guy with 22 allegations against him?? Where there's smoke, there's fire. Unbelievably disappointed in my beloved Browns."
  • Craig, Ashtabula: "Watson has shown that he can be an exceptional quarterback, but nobody knows if his talent remains and he can overcome his recent personal struggles. NFL history is rife with quarterbacks who were great for a few years and then their career collapsed. So long as his actions weren't criminal and he has learned from them, then I say welcome to Cleveland."
  • Ken, Kirtland: "Mayfield may not have been ideal, but the Browns treated him like garbage and knew long before saying that they were done with him. The Haslams, Berry, Stefanski are chronic liars. Worse than Modell in many regards."

How has your opinion of the Cleveland Browns changed since the signing of Deshaun Watson as quarterback?

Plain Dealer Endorsements

The Plain Dealer published its endorsements for the May 3 primary elections on Sunday. Early voting is already under way. The PD's choices in the U.S. Senate race are:

  • For the Republicans: State Sen. Matt Dolan, of Chagrin Falls
    • "Dolan is results-oriented and the only candidate with effective legislative experience, the gravitas we should expect from a senator and a clear vision of what he wants to do once he gets to Washington – a vision that aligns with conservative priorities that should be most important to the GOP electorate. And he is the only one of the seven who is not slavering for the endorsement of former President Donald Trump."
  • For the Democrats: U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, of Warren
    • Ryan, "who grew up in Niles and experienced both the Mahoning Valley’s painful manufacturing retrenchments and its current hopes to become the 'Voltage Valley,' ... is the superior choice for Democrats in this race. ... Ryan wants to concentrate on economic reform, health care, taking care of the Great Lakes and education, among other issues, but the one thing that has marked his career from the start has been his commitment to workers, organized labor and the middle class."
