Cleveland Police Dispatch Took Half An Hour To Send Officers To Girl's Fatal Hit-And-Run

Apolina Asumani

1) When a hit-and-run driver killed 5-year-old Apolina Asumani in April, Cleveland police officers didn't arrive on West 50th Street until 33 minutes after someone called for help. An ambulance arrived just five minutes after the girl was hit. Why? A Fox 8 I-Team report reveals what happened:

  • A dispatcher could not find an available patrol car to respond. Two nearby patrol cars were on cases at a local hospital. Others were at a domestic violence call, a burglary and a fire. Still others were working a traffic hazard, illegal dumping and foot patrol.
  • An internal police review showed the dispatchers miscoded the call and should have taken more action to redirect officers to the hit-and-run scene.

2) Deshaun Watson's disciplinary hearing for violations of the NFL's personal conduct policy will begin Tuesday. Sources told the Wall St. Journal the league wants to impose an indefinite suspension on Watson, citing five out of the 24 cases with overwhelming evidence against him. He would need to apply for reinstatement. The players union is prepared to fight any lengthy suspension, citing past cases of lenient discipline for misbehaving owners.

Sports Illustrated says that means the Browns will have a dramatic salary-cap advantage over other teams in 2023 and be able to sign more top-talent free agents in a quest for a Super Bowl. (SI.com)
