Did Inconsolable Grief Push Jayland Walker Into Confrontation With Police?

1) In the month since Jayland Walker's fiancé died in a hit-and-run crash, the young man's behavior changed, according to family and friends. Jaymeisha Beasley was his high school sweetheart. Akron police found a wedding band next to a handgun in the front seat of his car after he was shot 60 times by eight officers who chased him. For a man who'd never been in trouble with the law, Walker, 25, sped away from police twice in the last month, the second time resulting in his death. Sources say Walkers behavior and state of mind will be examined in the probe conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

2) A vacant house in Slavic Village went up in flames early Tuesday morning, and Cleveland officials believe children playing with fireworks caused the fire. The house on East 71st Street near Fleet was a total loss. The fire department said the flames were so intense the home next door caught fire, too. The mother and son living in that home escaped injury.
3) In the wake of an Independence Day mass shooting in Illinois that took the lives of seven parade-goers, orphaned a toddler, and wounded more than two dozen others, Ohio is stepping up security at the State Fair. New gun laws in the Buckeye State mean more people likely will be carrying concealed weapons. A large force of troopers will be patrolling the fairgrounds this year.
- Troopers Everywhere: "Everywhere that you look while you're at the fair, we want to make sure that you have a trooper that you can see. Someone that you can run to or go over to," Lt. Nathan Davis told 3News WKYC.
- No-Gun Zones: "If you bring weapons in, just know that firearms are not permitted inside of any of the buildings or inside any of the liquor permitted establishments on the ground," Davis said.
Also, flags in Ohio will fly at half staff through July 9 on orders of Gov. Mike DeWine to honor the Fourth of July shooting victims.

4) The pandemic has claimed another Cleveland eatery — Luchita's Mexican Restaurant on the West Side closed last week after 40 years in business. For the last 15 years, Eduardo Galindo has run the family establishment started by his late grandmother in 1982. "We've been very fortunate to last as long as we have. We're very thankful for all the people who have come through those doors over the past 40 years," Galindo told Douglas Trattner, dining editor for Cleveland Scene.

5) More than 200 pension plans are at risk of insolvency, affecting more than 100,000 Ohioans who work in trucking, construction, mining and other trades people, from local bakers to musicians. President Biden will explain how the American Rescue Plan would save those pensions. Biden will speak at Max S. Hayes High School in Cleveland on Wednesday afternoon.
