'The Greatest Kicker The Browns Have Had Since The Phil Dawson Days'

1) Cade York may not have been the fourth-round draft pick we wanted, but he's the hero we needed Sunday as he kicked the Cleveland Browns' 58-yard game-winning field goal with just seconds left on the lock. His leg gave the Browns a 26-24 win over the Carolina Panthers and former Browns QB Baker Mayfield, who engineered a go-ahead touchdown drive in the game's waning minutes before York's kick — the longest by a rookie in their team's first game in NFL history. This is the first opening day victory for the Browns since 2004.

🧡 Voice of the Browns Jim Donovan breaks down the game on this video, calling York "the first great kicker the Browns have had since the Phil Dawson days"

🧡 Browns writer Ashley Bastock explains how "confidence" and an accurate leg are why the team drafted York in Round 4

Here are three things to know about Cade York, who was six for six on his attempts Sunday, making four field goals and two extra points.

  1. York grew up in McKinney, TX, graduated from Prosper High School, and played soccer for most of his childhood. He only took up football in high school, where his longest kick was 47 yards.
  2. At Louisiana State University, he majored in finance and earned a 3.9 grade point average. He once kicked a 59-yard field goal at LSU and a 57-yarder in the fog. York also sold "celebrity shoutouts" via Jenloop.com for $20 to $300 a pop, depending on the platform. (Now that he's a bonafide Cleveland hero, he might get a lot more requests.)
  3. York turned 21 in January. This young man has a sense of humor, too, as his Twitter bio simply states: "Cleveland Browns # 3 (I kick balls)"

2) HalloWeekends will return to Cedar Point this coming Thursday, Sept. 15, and run through Sunday, Oct. 30, featuring 11 haunted attractions and a kids costume contest. HalloWeekends draws some of the year's biggest crowds. There will be two new haunted houses: Bloodbath and the Hunting of Eerie Estate. Scary costumed people will wander the park, too, and every Thursday will have a special show. HalloWeekends is in its 25th year at Cedar Point. Tickets start at $49.99.

3) Cleveland city officials are discussing a drawdown of police officers at Cleveland Hopkins Airport due to the shortage of cops on the force. The officers would be replaced with private security guards, according to a report from the Fox 8 I-Team. One plan reportedly calls for "sharp cuts" to the number of officers at the airport, which has seen an assortment of crimes in the parking garage, luggage thefts, assaults and even cars driving through security fences.

4) Local election boards are receiving mass mailing blitzes of identical public records requests to preserve materials from the 2020 elections, including copies of ballots, absentee ballot identification envelopes, voting machine reports, poll books and other files that would total tens of thousands of documents. “They’re asking for information that the requester doesn’t understand what it is," said Lake County Board of Elections Director Ross McDonald. Both Republican and Democratic election officials say Ohio elections are secure and these requests largely do not make sense. Now 22 months past the election, by law election boards would be allowed to dispose of these files. With the pending public records requests, they must find a way to preserve them with precious little space to do so.

5) A man's body was recovered from the Lake Erie shoreline Saturday evening near the 12000 block of Lake Avenue in Lakewood by the fire department. The Coast Guard also responded when passersby saw the body in the water. Police are investigating and told news reporters more information would not be released until Monday.

Oktoberfest In Parma

We had a great time at Oktoberfest in Parma on Friday night at the German Central Foundation. Das Glockenspiel dancers put on quite a show, too!

Fiona merrily waddles along on walks, or spends time snorting and snuffling around our play yards, but she much prefers crawling in a lap for some smushy snuggle time. Her favorite thing is belly rubs and you'll want to rub her velvety tummy all day! She's one silly goober who is sure to bring a smile to her family's face. Fiona is estimated to be around 4 years old and weighs 62 lbs." (City Dogs Cleveland via Facebook)

  • Weirdos Are My People: "Yesterday at the corner of Warren and Triskett roads there was a young man dressed in red wearing a head set dancing and smiling like there was no tomorrow. He was smiling and waving at cars passing by. At first I thought what a weirdo, or he must be high (he couldn't have been high to dance that well) then I thought he was just trying to make people happy and that's what we need" (Mike Kauntz via Nextdoor)

Win-Win Situation

I imagine this kid in the stands at Sunday's Carolina-Cleveland game, with a Browns cap and a Panthers jersey, felt like he'd come out a winner no matter the outcome. Or maybe he just lost a bet with a school chum and had to wear that hat. 🤣
