Cleveland Mom Who Saved Cop's Life: 'I Could Not Let This Man Go Out Like That'

1) A Cleveland police officer "deathly allergic" to bees was stung twice at a back-to-school event Saturday, but a quick-thinking and fast-moving mom who ran to her nearby home for an Epi-Pen helped save his life. Sgt. Ray O'Connor collapsed and fell unconscious, his partner dragged him to a squad car, and Tomika Johnson ran to her house to get her 10-year-old son's Epi-Pen. “I kept yelling “Hit ’em in the hip, hit ’em in the hip,” because I could not let this man go out like that,” Johnson said. “It just kicked in. Like the motherly instinct just kicked in. I can’t help it, I’m human.” 👏 👏 👏
2) Voters in East Cleveland have a chance to rid themselves of City Council Vice President Ernest Smith in a recall vote scheduled for Nov. 8. In 2019, Smith hosted a back-to-school fundraiser with underage strippers and sold booze without a license from a defunct Euclid Avenue tavern. Most recently, he's come under fire for how he uses his city-issued credit card and city-owned car. Smith was appointed to the post in 2017.

3) Peter Billingsley — the boy from 1983's classic "A Christmas Story" — is reprising his role in a sequel that will begin streaming Nov. 17 on HBO Max. Called "A Christmas Story Christmas," the movie features a grown-up Ralphie as a dad dealing with Christmas. He wants to give his family the kind of Christmas he had growing up in that famous Tremont house on "Cleveland Street" as he deals with his feelings on the passing of his father. The producers of the film include Billingsley and Vince Vaughn.
4) New details have come to light in the crimes of Shawn Romer, 41, an Independence attorney and onetime "Super Lawyer Rising Star" who was sent to prison for buying drugs and having sex with a teen. Romer made the 15-year-old who was the victim of sex trafficking do cocaine with him after he showered with her, according to papers filed by the Ohio Supreme Court Office of Discipline. Romer is serving a three-year prison sentence but could face additional legal punishment.
5) OMG, guys, don't break Jacoby Brissett before the season even begins! Brissett, set to start in place of the suspended Deshaun Watson, hit his hand on a defender's helmet in practice Thursday in a moment that made coach Kevin Stefanski unhappy. “I was seeing red for a minute there,” Stefanski said. “Our guys have done an awesome job all camp of staying away from the quarterback, and we just have to continue to do a good job there.” The Browns host the Chicago Bears in the final preseason game Saturday — the first time Browns fans will get to see Brissett on the field.

- Sweetheart with spunk: "Three-year-old Angel wants to be your little slice of heaven! She is an earnest, social and petite princess. When she was found, Angel was extremely skinny. She eats two small meals a day to help her gain weight so although she weighed 40lbs when she arrived, she should weigh more once healthy. Volunteers report that Angel is quite pleasant to walk, especially when harnessed. She is a sweatheart with a bit of spunk who seems like she longs for the calm and routine of a home rather than the noisy chaos of the kennel. She almost always holds her business until she's outside, so she seems housebroken! If you want to give a dog a second chance, be Angel's angel!" (City Dogs Cleveland via Facebook)
- Melvin takes care of business at the airport: "Meet Melvin! Melvin is part of the JSI Janitorial Services team, and is the most recent recipient of the Fraport USA WINGS Award of Excellence for going above and beyond his responsibilities.
