Missing Skier, Cleveland Native, Found Dead In California

Sheriffs said the 43-year-old went missing after likely being trapped in whiteout conditions.

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland native who went missing while skiing was found dead in California, investigators said over the weekend.

Rory Angelotta, 43, was a St. Ignatius High School graduate and then moved to California. He was living in a town called Truckee, northwest of Sacramento, according to News 5. He worked at the Northstar Ski Resort.

Angelotta went missing on Christmas Day following a snowstorm and his body was found over the weekend, the Placer County Sheriffs said.

Crews spent six days searching for Angelotta and suspended operations Dec. 30, authorities said. Up to that point, there was no evidence of his whereabouts. Searchers later believed he became lost during the snowstorm and was about a half-mile from the Schaffer Mill Creek neighborhood. Sheriffs believe Angelotta traveled from the ski resort, became lost in whiteout conditions, and might have been trying to find his way back to Truckee.

"There was no indication of any suspicious or unusual activity. Due to the considerable distance Angelotta had travelled from the resort, it was not included in the original emergency search efforts. We offer our condolences to the family and hope that this will provide them closure to this tragic event," the sheriffs said in a statement.
