1) A Cleveland police officer who made "hateful" antisemitic statements on social media years before joining the force cannot be disciplined or fired, according to city officials. Ismail Quran, the 2019 officer of the year, called Jews "scumbag Yahoodi" and praised Adolf Hitler, writing "Let me salute Hitler."

  • "We are frustrated and disappointed that no charges can be filed ... despite extensive internal investigations by the Cleveland Division of Police (CDP), the City Prosecutor, and the Law Department," said Mayor Justin Bibb and Police Chief Wayne Drummond in a joint statement.
  • Quran was hired in 2018. “It’s something he did at a younger age, and it doesn’t reflect his views now,” Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association President Jeff Follmer said.
  • In response, Cleveland made several changes to training procedures, including behavior-based interviews, social media monitoring, and training for implicit and explicit bias.

3) Meet a good boy, Jack, the Cleveland City Dogs rescue who's featured on Ohio's new license plate. This friendly pittie was adopted by Timy Sullivan, who created the City Dogs adoption program. When Jack was found, he had a broken leg and didn't care for people much. Today, Jack greets people with kisses. "I’ve been blessed with many wonderful dogs in my life, but Jack is my heart dog. He has taught me so much about forgiveness and resilience and the joy of living in the present," Sullivan said. Cartoonist Jenny Campbell drew Jack's image for the plate.

Ohio Politics

  • Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin wants you to know he's a "strong Nan supporter" and is "livid" his name is on a promotion for a Mike DeWine fundraiser being held in Cleveland. Griffin endorsed Democrat Nan Whaley in the race for governor, but somehow an invitation to a development meeting with East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King, who's hosting the fundraiser for Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, led to Griffin's inclusion on the promotional flyer. King has apologized for the error. Several East Cleveland Democrats are also listed on the flyer.

  • Jimmy and Dee Haslam, who own the Cleveland Browns, are co-hosts of a Sept. 21 fundraiser for Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance, author of "Hillbilly Elegy." The latest polling shows Vance, a recently converted Trumper and venture capitalist, polling neck-and-neck with populist Democratic congressman Tim Ryan. The fundraiser takes place Sept. 21 at the Athletic Club of Columbus.
