OH Winter Storm Updates: Heavy Snowfall Expected Overnight

Winter weather is likely to continue through early Friday, the National Weather Service warned.

OHIO — Heavy snowfall will continue through Thursday night and into Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

"To clarify, the heaviest snow will fall across our area through late this evening with some sleet mixing in south of Route 30. Lighter snow will linger through Friday morning," the agency said on Twitter.

Less than 0.5 inches of snow is expected Friday morning, according to forecasts. Winds could continue to hit 35 mph, making travel difficult.

"Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute," the National Weather Service added.

Flights Canceled, Delayed

Hundreds of flights were canceled Thursday across Ohio, leading to travel headaches for weary travelers who were already dealing with a bitter cold and snow.

In northeast Ohio, 100 departing flights were canceled at Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport, or about 72 percent, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware. Another 95 arriving flights were also canceled, or 68 percent.

In southwest Ohio, 103 departing flights were canceled and 98 arriving flights were canceled at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. That represented 57 percent and 71 percent of flights, respectively.

Power Outages

With heavy snowfall and thick ice, the threat of power outages is strong during this winter storm, the National Weather Service previously said. As of 4 p.m. Thursday, there were 140 outages across FirstEnergy's coverage area in northern Ohio.

The majority of outages were Cuyahoga County, with scattered outages in other parts of the state.

ODOT On The Road

As of 6 a.m., more than 1,100 plows were clearing roads and treating surfaces throughout the state, the Ohio Department of Transportation said on social media.

"Use caution conditions are changing quickly as the snow accumulates. Stay home if you can and give our plow trucks plenty of room to work!" ODOT said on Twitter.
