Ohio State Abuse Scandal Subject Of George Clooney-Produced Documentary

(AP Photo/Angie Wang, File)

George Clooney is producing a documentary about a massive sex abuse scandal at Ohio State University, where hundreds of athletes accused Dr. Richard Strauss of sexually abusing them between 1978 and 1998. Strauss was the team doctor for 17 collegiate sports.

  • The documentary is based on a 2020 Sports Illustrated story by Jon Werthein: "Why Aren't More People Talking About the Ohio State Sex Abuse Scandal?” Congressman Jim Jordan, who was an assistant wrestling coach while Strauss was the team doctor, knowingly ignored the abuse, Werthein alleged in the Sports Illustrated story.
  • OSU has settled claims by 286 victims for $59.7 million. Almost half of the accusers have not settled, however. More than 2,000 claims of abuse have been documented.
  • Dr. Strauss took his own life in 2005.

2) After two weeks on the CDC's "high" warning list for COVID-19, Cuyahoga County has been downgraded to "medium" status. That means the CDC is no longer recommending all county residents wear masks regardless of vaccination status while inside public places. The rating is based on new and active hospitalizations.

3) The Ohio Attorney General will investigate two officer-involved shootings in Cleveland. Datwaun Catchings, 22, was shot to death after a chase by Maple Heights police ended in Cleveland. Catchings pointed a gun at police, authorities said. Demond Eskridge, 42, was shot as he fought with Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority Police. Eskridge threw a mattress and TV from a balcony, then bit a police officer, was shot by a stun gun and fought with officers before he was shot, police said.

4) FirstEnergy Stadium will get $10 million in taxpayer-funded repairs, which includes $3 million to replace the rusted out and deteriorated pedestrian ramps that carry people to the upper levels. The ramps are a safety concern, according to city officials. Other repairs include a new heater and replacement doors and lights. Under terms of the Cleveland Browns lease agreement with the city, Cleveland pays for all repairs with money collected through sin taxes.

Are you a Cleveland resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
