Owner Paid Employees While His McDonald's Was Closed: 'I Have To Take Care Of Those Who Take Care Of Me'

1) The owner of a Mayfield Heights McDonald's closed his restaurant for remodeling in March — and he kept paying his employees the entire time his fast-food franchise was closed. "I have people here that make a living here and go from week-to-week pay," Tony Philiou told 3News WKYC. "How can I tolerate for them to not have a paycheck?"
Philiou told Breitbart News that the prospect of anyone losing their livelihood kept him up at night: “I was up at 2:30 in the morning, trying to sleep, thinking, ‘I have to pay them.' ... I have to take care of those who take care of me."
Here are 5 more things to know about 90-year-old Tony Philiou.
- Philiou came to the United States from Greece as a child in 1947.
- He began working part-time at the Mayfield Heights McDonald's in 1961. He lived across the street.
- He worked at TRW's Valve Division in the 1960s and served in the Korean War before buying his first store in 1977.
- He's owned as many as seven McDonald's restaurants.
- Some of his McDonald's employees have worked in his restaurant for decades.
The Mayfield Heights store reopened July 6.
2) Three Cleveland Guardians will appear in the MLB All-Star Game — José Ramirez, Andrés Giménez and Emmanuel Clase. Ramirez — making his fourth All-Star Game appearance — leads the American League with 66 RBI and is the Guardians' most important player. Giménez is batting .299, the best batting average for a second baseman. And Clase leads the American League in saves with 19 and has a 1.53 earned run average.

3) Slyman's Tavern — serving corned beef in Northeast Ohio since 1964 — has closed its Orange village location. The building will become a Restoration Hardware. Fans of Slyman's should visit the remaining Independence location at 6901 Rockside Road.

4) Four people were seriously hurt when a 24-foot boat crashed into a breakwall at Edgewater Park in Cleveland at about 1 a.m. Sunday. Cleveland firefighters and the Coast Guard responded. Six people in total were aboard the boat. The four injured people ranged in age from 37 to 45 and were taken to a local hospital.
5) Pennsylvania's attorney general says Tioga violated state law when the borough failed to do a background check on the man who killed Tamir Rice in Cleveland and offered him a job anyway. Last week, Timothy Loehmann withdrew from the job after the people in the little borough of 700 residents objected to his hiring. Loehmann was fired from the Cleveland police force in 2017 because he lied on his application, failing to disclose that he'd been fired from a previous job as a police officer.
