West Side Shopping Center With History Will Be Demolished For A Sheetz

1) A shopping center that dates back to 1947 at the prominent corner of Pearl and Brookpark roads, where Cleveland and Parma meet, will be demolished to make way for new development, including a Sheetz gas station. Known as PearlBrook, this once was one of the largest strip-shopping centers in Cleveland. On either side stood two other noteworthy, landmark buildings — the Yorktown Theater and a Federal Department Store that eventually became Peaches Records and the Dixie Electric Company disco.

2) Eleven monkeypox cases are confirmed in the city of Cleveland, according to the Cleveland Department of Public Health. Contact tracing and surveillance is under way. The city is working to secure vaccines, which will be made available to anyone who has come into contact with the persons infected with monkeypox. The CDC reports 45 cases in Ohio, with one in Lorain County and two in Lake County.

3) Federal authorities have tracked down the "mad mailer" who sent letters laced with poop to Republican Ohio lawmakers in July. Richard John Steinle, 77, who lives outside of Akron, was arrested Friday and charged with mailing "injurious articles." It's against federal law to send human waste through the mail. Steinle, a retired court mediator, could face a year in prison. He'll return to federal court Aug. 25.

4) Can the Cleveland Water Department keep billions of plastic bits from getting into our Lake Erie drinking water? The world's bodies of water increasingly are filling up with microscopic plastic and the health impacts are not fully known. Ohio State University professor John Lenhart is going to spend the next two years testing Lake Erie drinking water to find out how much plastic is in there.

5) Cleveland native Kareem Hunt returned to full drills with the Cleveland Browns Sunday after sitting out team activities Friday and Saturday at training camp. The running back demanded a trade or a new contract, but the Browns said no. The Browns also fined Hunt for skipping drills.
