Police Officer Kneels And Prays With Knife-Wielding Man She Shot

1) After shooting Scott Bakker, a Wellington police officer knelt by his side and asked him: "You want to say a prayer? Are you a religious man? What kind of prayer do you want to say?" Bakker, afflicted with mental health issues, was hit twice with a Taser, pulled out the leads and laughed before he advanced on an officer with a knife. That's when he was shot.
- Police have been called to Bakker's home 19 times since October.
- The bodycam video was released Monday.
- Wellington, population 4,800, is a village in Lorain County, south of Oberlin.
2) A movie filmed in and around Cleveland starring Adam Driver and Don Cheadle will open the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 31. "White Noise," directed by Noah Baumbach, is described as “hilarious and horrifying, lyrical and absurd, ordinary and apocalyptic.” The film is about a college professor whose family is evacuated from their Midwestern town after a train accident causes a toxic event.
3) Here are the words of a school shooter, Jeff Jevnikar, who went into Willoughby South High School as a 15 year old, fired two shots, and lived to talk about it. "I scared all those kids in the school that day. Their parents were worried for them — parents of friends. It's like a ripple effect. ... So when I was there, and I shot the first shot, it's almost like it made me realize that it was really happening and it wasn't just all an idea in my head anymore. ... I was really there holding a gun in my high school that I had shot. No going back from there. ... I wish I could have just talked to somebody instead."
4) Tim Flossie, an Akron football coaching legend and lunch-pail hero who roamed the sidelines for four decades, motivating his players and winning big games, died earlier this month. He was 73. "He was always one of those guys that went above and beyond for students and players," remembered Scott Powers, who played for him at Buchtel High. "When you play for coach Flossie you aren’t just a player because he takes an interest in you as a person. Back when I was playing for him everyone knew he had that tough exterior, that tough love, but he always had that individual touch with the person.”
5) Elton John will perform at Progressive Field in Cleveland Saturday, July 30. And there's still time to get tickets to this sold-out show? How? Paris Wolfe has the deets on the resale market for this show, as well as upcoming shows in Chicago and Pittsburgh.
