1) Slow Ride, Take It Easy Amish Buggy Driver

🚓 A wayward horse and buggy going the wrong way down a dark road led Ashtabula County sheriff's deputies on a low-speed chase last week — a pursuit that came to an end when the buggy slammed into a squad car. Deputies spotted a man in the buggy dressed in Amish attire who appeared to be unconscious. After he fell from the buggy, police said, they administered a Breathalyzer and charged him with operating a vehicle under the influence.

2) The next Cleveland food purveyor to appear on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" is Mason's Creamery this Friday, May 20, at 9 p.m. on the Food Network. Mason's is known for the unique combo of ice cream and ramen.

  • Jesse Mason and Helen Qin own the Ohio City eatery.
  • The episode will feature an "outrageous ice cream-cake combo alongside a raclette-ramen mashup."

3) Sokolowski's University Inn, closed since October 2020 due to the pandemic, will be torn down and replaced with a 56-unit apartment building. The new owner of the property says he intends to save some of the Sokolowski's memorabilia.

  • “There are hundreds of items in the restaurant... some we will keep and preserve and definitely do a monumental structure that will commemorate the Sokolowski tradition,” said Giancarlo Calicchi, who's known the Sokolowskis for four decades.
  • Sokolowski's Polish restaurant has served Clevelanders from this spot on University Avenue in Tremont for a century.

4) Two Ohio crisis dogs have been called to duty in Buffalo to provide comfort to the families of the 10 people killed in the Tops grocery store mass shooting. Zodiac is a 1-year-old Akita owned by Shirley Graziano of Strongsville and Murphy is a 2-year-old border collie owned by Diane Eyring of Litchfield. Both dogs are Crisis Response Canines.

  • "Sometimes the kids, even if they don’t know it, they’re just standing there and just stroking the dog and it’s just helping them feel calmer," Graziano told Fox 8 News. "It really just softens the mood for the moment, even if it’s just a moment in time."

5) Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson apparently admitted to bringing a massage therapist to tears, according to leaked testimony obtained by USA Today. Watson testified a Houston-area massage therapist accusing him of touching her with his penis cried at the end of one of their 2020 sessions.

  • Watson was deposed last week in civil lawsuits filed by 22 women who claim Watson engaged in sexual misconduct during their massages.
  • Watson apologized to the woman via text message: "Sorry about you feeling uncomfortable. Never were the intentions. Lmk if you want to work in the future. My apologies."

This weekend, reports Browns beat writer Nate Ulrich for the Akron Beacon Journal, Watson will take his teammates to the Bahamas for workouts and bonding. Wonder what else is on the agenda.

Our Friends at Cleveland Animal Care & Control need help. They posted this message on their Facebook page, City Dogs Cleveland.

We are housing dogs in offices and overflow crates in our garage because the flow of incoming dogs isn't slowing down. It isn't sustainable.
We need our community's help as this is a community problem. The number of lost and loose dogs that are coming our way each day is staggering, and very few owners are coming to claim these dogs.
We also need homes for our dogs. Adoption fees are half off through the month of May, making them just $31! All of our available dogs can be viewed at www.petango.com/cacc. We currently have highly-adoptable dogs that have been sitting in our kennel for months with no interest, dogs which normally would be adopted within weeks. ... Our team is spread thin right now caring for so many dogs, so to better accommodate you, please submit the meet request form at tinyurl.com/meetacitydog to schedule a meet or give our adoption line a call at 216-664-3476.
With 120+ dogs up for adoption and dozens more not yet available, our staff and volunteers are working hard to take care of them but this pace is tough to keep up with – and we haven’t even hit our peak summer season yet.
