Cleveland Cop Killer Found Guilty, Faces Life In Prison

Tamara McLoyd (Cuyahoga County Jail)

1) A 19-year-old woman who says she didn't mean to kill an off-duty Cleveland police officer while she was carjacking him was found guilty Wednesday. Tamara McLoyd faces life in prison without parole in the death of Shane Bartek. She carjacked Bartek on New Year's Eve and carjacked another car on Christmas Day in the same spot.

2) Let's all caravan down to Columbus to see Joe Walsh and the James Gang reunite for a concert to benefit veterans on Nov. 13. Tickets go on sale Aug. 5. Walsh will be joined by fellow Ohioan Dave Grohl, founder of the Foo Fighters and a Warren native. The Breeders, Nine Inch Nails and Black Keys — all with roots in Ohio — will round out the bill. Walsh went to Kent State University and played in several Cleveland bands, including one called the Measles, before finding a life that's been good to him so far with the Eagles (and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame).

3) How do you pronounce Cuyahoga? Might depend on where you grew up. Is it Cuya-HO-guh or Cuya-HOG-uh? Says John Grabowski, a history professor at Case Western Reserve University, "One person has traced it back to its Native American origins and claims that it's ‘Cuya-HO-guh,’ not ‘Cuya-HOG-uh.’ ... Another story is that the folks on the West Side of Cleveland get into this West-Side-East-Side-divide. I would probably go with ‘Cuya-HO-guh’ because of that little inkling that it does reflect the Native American pronoun."

(I grew up pronouncing it Cuya-HOG-uh.)

4) The oldest Black-owned funeral home in Cleveland — E.F. Boyd & Son Funeral Home — is capturing attention with billboards that send an anti-violence message: "Stop the violence or face the mourning after." Funeral home owner Marcella Boyd Cox said, "It’s very sad and it’s just hard to see the neighborhood changing like it is. People don’t feel safe to walk the street at night."

K9 Rye is healing up.

5) Dr. Amy Pajcic of Animal Clinic Northview describes for Fox 8 News how she worked to save the life of K9 Rye, a Lorain police dog, who was stabbed four times by a man the dog confronted in a basement last week. Rye was stabbed in the face and Dr. Pajcic had to stop bleeding from the K9 cop's mouth. The fugitive who stabbed Rye was shot dead by police. Rye is home now recovering nicely.
