Sub-Zero Wind Chills Possible Soon In Northern Ohio: Forecast

Plummeting temperatures increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite for people exposed to the conditions for long stretches.

CLEVELAND — Sub-zero wind chills could sweep through northern Ohio on Thursday and Friday night.

Temperatures could fall into the single digits on both Thursday night (10 degree low expected) and Friday night (4 degree low expected). With wind chills, temperatures on both evenings will feel sub-zero, the National Weather Service said.

The wind chill index, the National Weather Service said, will give Ohioans a warning if weather conditions could lead to frostbite or hypothermia.

"For example, a temperature of minus 5 degrees occurring with a 20 mph wind gives a wind chill near minus 30 degrees. This means that your body will lose heat at the same rate as it would if the air temperature were minus 30 degrees with no wind. Wind chill values near minus 25 degrees mean that frostbite is possible within 15 minutes," the agency said on its website.

Here are the National Weather Service's tips for staying safe amid possible sub-zero temperatures:

  • Avoid getting wet. Wearing wet or moistened clothing could accelerate how quickly you lose heat from your body.
  • Layer. Wear multiple layers of clothes and don gloves, hats and scarves to keep yourself insulated.
  • Minimize how much time you spend outdoors, if you can.

Luckily, temperatures should start to rise on Saturday. The forecast high is 25 degrees on Saturday, while the expected low is 20 degrees. Sunday will see similar temperatures, though the overnight low could fall into the teens, the National Weather Service said.
