Tamir Rice's Family Unveils Memorial In Cleveland Park Where Boy Was Killed By Police

“The family is in a grieving process still, after eight years. It’s very hard to be here, but I’m happy, too, because this is the last memory of my son."
— Samaria Rice, Tamir Rice's mother

1) Tamir Rice's family celebrated what would have been his 20th birthday with a memorial Saturday in Cudell Park, where the boy was shot by Cleveland police when he was 12 years old. The memorial looks like a butterfly and is filled with butterfly-attracting flowers. The child, who was playing with an airsoft gun, was sitting under a gazebo when police drove up to him and shot him within seconds of arriving in the park in 2014. “It’s just real nice, a nice place that doesn’t have to be remembered as the tragic place that it was," his sister, Tasheonna Rice, said.

2) A subpoena has been served to a nonprofit connected to former Cleveland City councilman and mayoral candidate Basheer Jones. The city law department was also served with a subpoena. The subpoenas target financial records relating to federal block grants and payments to people and companies associated with the Basheer Jones Foundation and Basheer Jones Unlimited LLC. While on the council, Jones directed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Lexington-Bell Community Center and his nonprofit Famicos Foundation.

3) "Authentic Chicago-style Italian beef" sandwiches are coming to Greater Cleveland when Tiffany Ballog and Jakob Kelly open Au Jus in Parma this September. The small eatery will be located at 5875 Broadview Road. They plan to serve sandwiches until 2 a.m. “Pretty much in the city of Parma everything dies off at 8 or 9 o’clock,” Kelly says. They also plan to offer sausage sandwiches, Philly cheesesteak and a variety of breakfast foods. (Check out the menu.)

4) A life-sized Malibu Barbie pop-up truck will visit Crocker Park on Saturday, July 23. The truck is traveling to 24 cities across the country and will be in Westlake from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Barbie fans can buy t-shirts, totes, hoodies, hats and other gear to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Malibu Barbie.

5) 🦌 Here's a little bit of awww. 😊 Shaker Heights police officer Andrew Chenevy rescued a struggling fawn from a backyard swimming pool. Video of the save was posted on the police department's Facebook page. The fawn wasted no time scampering through the bars of a fence after being freed from the pool. “We’re glad we could help the newcomer live to swim another day!" the PD wrote on Facebook.
