Did Middle School Teachers Encourage Their Students To Brawl?

1) Maybe these teachers thought they were running a middle-school fight club instead of teaching history and math: Two Lorain teachers are under investigation for urging middle schoolers to throw fists in the school hallway. The clash was recorded on school security video and student cell phones as were scenes of the two teachers mocking the children.

  • "I really struggle with what I’ve seen in these videos, and I want to make it clear that anyone who violates our promise to take care of the children of Lorain is unwelcome here in our district," said Superintendent Jeff Graham.
  • The incident happened May 9 at Southview Middle School in the Lorain City School District.
  • The district released a statement about the investigation on Wednesday.

2) Jayland Walker, a gentle, quiet "mama's boy" who was shot 60 times by Akron police, was laid to rest Wednesday as 300 people gathered at the Akron Civic Center to grieve with his family. His cousin, Rev. Robert DeJournett of St. Ashworth Temple Church of God in Christ, delivered the eulogy. “I never thought people across the country would be calling my cousin’s name. We never thought this would happen in Akron, Ohio, and I never thought it would be my family.” People from around the country have come to Akron for two weeks to protest his death.

3) Several Cleveland City Council members are sponsoring an ordinance that would ban conversion therapy on minors in the city. Conversion therapy is a controversial, discredited practice used against LGBTQ youth in an attempt to alter sexual orientation. If passed, the law would prevent therapists from practicing "sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression change efforts with a minor, without regard to whether the mental health professional is compensated or receives any form of renumeration for his or her services."

4) Geraldo Rivera has called Greater Cleveland "home" for the last five years, living in Shaker Heights and commuting to New York City to spend half the week there for Fox News. You might spy him and his wife, Erica, out for dinner at The Fairmount, Sara's Place or the Marble Room. And he's a big fan of the Harbor Inn in the Flats: “It’s my favorite bar in America. Possibly the world.”

5) Six Cleveland police officers recently received medals for facing down gunfire and apprehending a man during a domestic violence call on Christmas night 2020. Officers Kevin Brown and Jessica Wolski were awarded the Medal of Heroism. The Distinguished Service Medal was awarded to officers Molly Madaras, Cassandra Midlik, Heather Lindsay and Chae Simpson. Despite being shot at several times, the officers held their fire until the man laid down his rifle. As he was taken into custody the suspect told them, "I had too much to drink."
