Oh Baby! Congrats To This Calm Dispatcher Who Helped New Dad Deliver His Son

1) Megan Gallagher is the first and thus far only Chagrin Valley Dispatch Center operator to earn a "Stork Pin" for helping a 911 caller bring a baby into the world. The honor was bestowed this week. The baby boy was born in July. An expectant father from Brecksville made the 911 call, and Gallagher coached him through the birth for 7 minutes and 57 seconds — at the end of which she heard a newborn baby’s first cries.

2) Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse plays host to A Taste of Black Cleveland: The Food Showcase on Thursday, Aug. 18, from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Twenty Black-owned restaurants from Greater Cleveland will prepare dishes for people to taste. VIPs will vote on the food. VIP tickets are $85. Regular admission, which includes buffet appetizers and a ticket to a Cavs game, is $45. There also will be a People's Choice Drink of the Night competition. The event is sponsored by the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Cleveland NAACP, The Real Black Friday and Aramark.

3) Two Bowling Green State University students — Troy Henricksen, 24, and Jacob Krinn, 21 — were sentenced to six weeks in jail Wednesday for misdemeanors related to the hazing death of Stone Foltz. The former frat brothers were acquitted in May of involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide charges. Foltz, 20, of Delaware, Ohio, died of alcohol poisoning in March 2021 after a Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity initiation. He drank an entire fifth of bourbon in 20 minutes and was on life support for three days. Six other fraternity members were convicted of lesser charges in the case.

4) A new bistro, The Reserve, will open Aug. 23 in Chagrin Falls, reports dining correspondent Douglas Trattner for Cleveland Scene. The new spot replaces Umani. The entire joint has been remodeled. “The number one complaint we’ve always heard is that you really had to plan to be here,” co-owner Mike Mendlovic said of Umani. “You had to call a couple days in advance to get a table. You could never just stop in for a quick bite and a drink.” The new restaurant is designed to make it possible for more pop-in customers.

5) An 18-year-old man was fatally shot just a few hundred feet from Glenville High School Wednesday afternoon in the 600 block of East 113th Street near St. Clair Avenue. The shooting took place around 4 p.m. The teen was dead at the scene. A possible second victim reportedly was taken to the hospital in a car but that has not been confirmed.

  • Gotta love a dog who smiles AND wiggles: "We like Mike! This cutie with the pita chip ears and earnest smile is an eager beaver. He really enjoys getting out and about to soak up all the smells he can with his button nose... and coming up with new clever ways to earn treats. He's so darn happy to be there that Mike wiggles when he walks! Mike has a big affectionate side as well, and loves head and butt scratches and cuddling up close to people he knows well. Mike is estimated to be around 5 years old and weighs 52 lbs." (City Dogs Cleveland via Facebook)
  • Guardians prospects coming up strong: "Farm to field. 🌽 Boasting not only the youngest roster in baseball, we also lead the Majors with nine of MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects, as of the start of the week. #ForTheLand" (Cleveland Guardians via Instagram)
  • See the art of Charmaine Spencer: "Cleveland artist and sculptor Charmaine Spencer showcases her work of towering wall displays created from natural materials such as driftwood, red clay, reed grass, hemp thread and soil in 'New Growth,' now on display in the Eppig Gallery at Cleveland Botanical Garden through September 25th. Spencer has won major awards throughout her tenure at CIA, graduating in 2005, and moving on to produce public and private commissions, directing her own studio and holding workshops for adults and young students." (Cleveland Botanical Garden via Facebook)
  • No streaming of Guardians games: "Due to struggles in the MLB negotiations, Guardians games (which air on Bally Sports) won't be available streaming, at least not for the remainder of the current season. The service will be regionally restricted as well, so Northeast Ohio residents who hail from elsewhere and were hoping to catch their hometown teams via Bally Sports+ will have to find other means."
