Here are the top three stories today in Cleveland:
- The Cleveland City Council approved a pilot program between West Side Market and Rust Belt Riders that will send food that usually goes to landfills to compost. The program will begin in 2023 after the busy season has passed. When food is still fresh, it will be donated to the hungry. (Subscription: cleveland.com)
- After four decades, Major Thomas Applin of The Salvation Army will hang up his Santa hat. Applin has been part of the kettle campaign for 41 years and played music, bundled up, and got to know the community in Greater Cleveland. Applin says he believes the Red Kettles are part of the nation's history and each bell ring represents the promise of a neighbor being served by The Salvation Army. (Cleveland 19 News)
- Yesterday marked the 20th annual Rainbow Radiothon for the University Hospital's Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. The fundraiser is a way the community can donate to the hospital, which has saved countless young lives. The event has raised over $3 million since it began two decades ago. Funds will go to cutting-edge research and services not covered by insurance. (News 5 Cleveland WEWS)
