Greater Cleveland Needs More Public Bikes And Scooters

1) Where should Cuyahoga County place more public bicycles and scooters? The county wants to expand the bike-and-scooter program to more neighborhoods and inner ring suburbs and needs to hear from the public. Possible locations include Edgewater, Lakewood, South Brooklyn and West Park on the west side and Cleveland Heights, East Cleveland, Glenville, Shaker Heights, South Euclid and University Heights on the east side. Public comment will be open through Sept. 30. Residents can email ideas to sustainability@cuyahogacounty.us.

2) East Cleveland Police Chief Scott Gardner is accused of stealing as much as $150,000 from the Fraternal Order Of Police and dodging his taxes for five years, among other crimes. Cuyahoga County indicted Gardner on 13 felony charges. The prosecutor's office says the investigation of Gardner, who's worked for the department since 1999, remains open. Gardner, 47, has been placed on leave. He will be arraigned Sept. 12.

3) About 20 protesters from a group called America Needs Fatima descended on Near West Theatre in the Gordon Square Arts District to disrupt Drag Queen Story Hour, likening the recurring event to child abuse. The protest took place across the street from the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland. Passersby shouted at them to go home and the show went on despite them. Show host Veranda L’Ni thanked the community for supporting the drag queens: "We’re going to keep reading stories of acceptance and inclusion and fun and silliness and dancing and having a great time. Thank you to the parents and guardians who bring their kids to this program ... sharing the love and telling them it’s ok to be themselves."

4) The Chocolate Bar on Euclid Avenue and East 4th Street was forced to close after 13 years in business. "The Chocolate Bar thanks you for your 13 years of loyal patronage," management of the martini bar wrote Monday on Facebook. "It has become too difficult with the lack of staff to provide our loyal customers with the quality of service they deserve. It has been a pleasure to serve you and be a part of the many birthday celebrations, rehearsal dinners, retirement parties, bachelorette parties and graduation festivities that were celebrated here."

5) A Cleveland architecture firm has joined the charge to get landmark status for the historic Sidaway Bridge. The pedestrian bridge spans Kingsbury Run and connects the Kinsman Road neighborhood to the Jackowo Polish neighborhood. In 1966, during the Hough Riots, the wooden planks were torn out of the walkway and someone tried to set the bridge on fire. The bridge has been closed ever since. Built in 1930, it was Cleveland's first and only suspension bridge.
