Snow Storm Hits Ohio: Power Outages, Snowfall Predictions

A "fast-moving clipper" is bringing snowfall and subzero temperatures into northern Ohio on Sunday.

OHIO — Lake-effect snow is pounding northern Ohio Sunday. Approximately 1 inch of snow is falling per hour in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

"Moderate to heavy snowfall will continue to fall for Lorain County to Lake County as a lake enhance snow band enhances snowfall inland. Snowfall rates near 1 inch per hour can be expected over the next hour, resulting in additional accumulations near 1 inch," the agency said. "Plan extra time if you must travel and be prepared for snow covered roads, slick conditions, and reduced visibilites."

Counties south of Lorain, Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga may see lightening snow in the afternoon, according to forecasts. Drivers should still proceed with caution.

"Give yourself extra time to reach your destination and take it slow if you'll be out and about today with a Winter Weather Advisory for all of our area!" the National Weather Service said in a post on Twitter.

Power Outages

With any winter storm comes the threat of power outages. According to FirstEnergy, nearly 300 customers were without power at 2:45 p.m.

The majority of outages occurred in Summit and Trumbull counties, according to the company's outages map. The company estimates that power should be restored to the majority of impacted residents by 4 or 5 p.m. Sunday.

Getting Colder, Seeing More Snow

Subzero wind chills are also likely Sunday night. Temperatures are expected to fall into the single digits overnight. With 5-10 mph winds likely, conditions in many northern Ohio communities will feel subzero.

The snow is likely to continue through Sunday night and into Monday. Current forecasts call for between 2 and 5 inches to fall throughout Monday, the National Weather Service warned. In fact, there is a chance snow flurries develop Tuesday and Wednesday before finally drying out on Thursday.
