1) A Mexican gray wolf briefly escaped from a Cleveland Metroparks Zoo enclosure and wandered near a tram carrying zoo visitors Sunday morning. "The wolf ran by us on the left, then turned around and ran back up the hill," Jesse Hudson told 3News WKYC. "I thought it was a coyote, actually. I thought it was more likely that an animal got into the zoo, than an animal that was in the zoo got loose."

  • The 4-year-old female wolf, named Sarra, was tranquilized by zoo staff and returned to her proper habitat.
  • This breed, Canis Lupus Bailey, is the smallest and rarest of the gray wolf subspecies.
  • The zoo has five of these wolves: Sarra, Meraki, Aldo, Inigo and Nestor.

2) A Padua Franciscan High School student choking in the lunchroom was saved by cafeteria worker Megan Kulikowski of North Royalton last week. The student approached Kulikowski and tried to speak to her but could only talk in a whisper. “She said, ‘Help.’ It wasn’t completely audible. Her face was starting to get red, so I screamed for help, threw my arms around her and performed a thrust. By the time my coworker came out from the kitchen, we looked on the ground and there was a plastic water bottle top that had come out.”

3) One person is dead and at least 10 others wounded in a shooting at the Just Us Lounge & Deli in East Cleveland at 3 a.m. Monday. The bar was hosting an unofficial reunion party for alumni of Shaw High School when someone outside began shooting. The reunion happens every Labor Day weekend. “Someone in their right mind wouldn’t spray the crowd with bullets and want to hurt someone. I mean, why would you want to hurt someone at a celebration?” said Dawn Jones.

4) Several Cleveland restaurant operators told food reporter Marc Bona that staffing issues and price hikes have led to a drop in sales this year, echoing the results of an Ohio survey of restaurateurs. More than half of the survey respondents said sales dropped this year. Restaurants are still staying closed on certain days or limiting hours. Meanwhile, 91 percent of restaurants told the Ohio Restaurant Association that they've raised prices and 65 percent changed menu items.
