1) The Eastern black rhino baby born July 9 at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has a name — Dalia. More than $10,000 was raised for rhino conservation via a naming contest. The name was revealed Tuesday.

  • Dalia makes her zoo debut for the public on Wednesday in the outdoor rhino habitat. The baby and her mom, Kibibbi, have been bonding the last few weeks.
  • Because of poaching, Eastern black rhino are critically endangered and there may be fewer than 750 left in the wild.

2) Efforts to ban books in public schools are all the rage these days, and Greater Cleveland is no exception. Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye," published in 1970, has been targeted in Rocky River schools by Chuck Bartsche, who says, “Just by the title, you know, it falls under that CRT category of trying to make a class of people, by their skin color, victims and other ones as oppressors." Bartsche, however, has raised the ire of parents who value the opportunity for their children to learn about what ails the world and read the work of an acclaimed author. “Let’s not educate our kids about the atrocities of mankind,” one replied to him sarcastically. “Is there a book about rainbows and lollipops they can read instead?”

3) The chief executive at the famous Royal Albert Hall in London is coming to Cleveland to serve as president and chief executive officer of Playhouse Square. Welcome, Craig Hassall. He'll succeed the retiring Gina Vernaci. Hassall, 57, will move here early next year. Playhouse Square celebrated its centennial in 2022. "We are thrilled to bring one of the world's top artistic leaders to Cleveland as we continue to build on our position of strength and expand our local, national and international impact," said Amy Brady, chair of the Playhouse Square Board of Trustees.

4) You won't leave hungry after dining at Stay Hungry 216, which opens in South Euclid on Aug. 17. Chef Chad Lewis has partnered with chef Eric Rogers (known for Black Box Fix) to bring Stay Hungry 216 to the region. The eatery specializes in "fast-casual comfort and soul food," writes dining expert Douglas Trattner.

5) NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday made it clear the league wants Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson suspended for an entire season because he violated the league's misconduct policy. “There were multiple violations that were egregious and it was predatory behavior. Those are things that we always felt were important for us to address in a way that’s responsible.” Two dozen women accused Watson of unwanted sexual contact during massages. An independent disciplinary officer imposed a six-game suspension.
