Boil Advisory Issued For University Heights, Other Communities

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH — A boil advisory has been issued for University Heights, Highland Heights, Richmond Heights, Lyndhurst, South Euclid, Euclid, Mayfield, Mayfield Heights and Gates Mills.

A water main broke in Richmond Heights at approximately 6 a.m. on Tuesday. The break may have allowed sickness-inducing organisms into the water supply, according to Cleveland Water. The boil advisory will likely remain in place through Wednesday.

Residents in impacted communities should not drink tap water without flushing and boiling it first, Cleveland Water said. Here's what that means:

• Flush all the taps in your house that you use for cooking and drinking. Run the taps for at least 3 minutes.
• Collect water you intend to cook or drink with in a pan or pot and boil it. Let the water boil for at least 1 minute. Let it cool before using.
• If you are in a hurry, use bottled water.
• Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation until further notice.

"Waterborne illness may include nausea and stomach discomfort. If you experience one or more of these symptoms and they persist, contact your doctor. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly people may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers," Cleveland Water said.

Customers may also want to use a water filter when collecting any water for boiling. The filter will help remove lead and other elements in the water.
