University of Dayton excels in Ohio reading metrics, scores 100% (dayton247now.com) — Dayton residents can take pride in the University of Dayton earning a perfect score in Ohio’s new science-of-reading metrics, reflecting years of curriculum changes. State leaders are pushing this evidence-based approach across Ohio, while some other universities, including nearby Wright State, work to fix noncompliant courses and regain alignment status.
   

2. Dayton eatery gives free meals to support families facing food insecurity during holidays (dayton247now.com) — A Dayton restaurant in the Oregon District, Wheat Penny Oven and Bar, spent Thursday giving away hundreds of free takeaway meals to local individuals and families struggling with food insecurity. Inspired by other Miami Valley eateries, the effort also included SICSA handing out free dog and cat food so residents wouldn’t have to choose between feeding themselves or their pets during the holidays.
   

3. UD receives $5M for new student health center (wdtn.com) — University of Dayton leaders have pledged nearly $5 million toward a new Health and Wellbeing Center that will expand medical, counseling, and fitness services on campus. The 32,800-square-foot Dayton facility aims to boost appointment capacity, extend counseling hours, and eliminate out-of-pocket health and wellness costs for incoming undergraduates when it opens in fall 2026.
   

4. Ohio Secretary of State and Dayton BBB warn shoppers of rising holiday scam threats (dayton247now.com) — Dayton’s Better Business Bureau and Ohio’s Secretary of State are warning local shoppers to be on high alert for holiday scams, especially through social media, fake charities, and impersonated family calls. They urge residents to scrutinize fine print, monitor bank and credit statements, avoid sending money to strangers, and use the BBB’s online crime tracker to report suspicious activity.
   

5. Ohio secures funds for military pay raises, base upgrades (wdtn.com) — Dayton-area readers should know that Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is getting $60 million in federal funding, including a new Human Performance Wing Laboratory and a refurbished primary runway. The National Defense Authorization Act also delivers a 3.8% pay raise for service members and adds new safety requirements for aircraft maintenance workers, with Ohio lawmakers playing key roles in securing the money.
