Local Corrections Officers Complete Academy at WSCC
WSCC announces 8 corrections officers recently completed the Ohio Corrections Officer Basic Training Academy.

MARIETTA, OH — Washington State Community College (WSCC) announced that eight corrections officers from area agencies recently completed the Ohio Corrections Officer Basic Training Academy. The course was certified by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and included 148 hours of training on seven subject areas required for certification to be employed as Corrections Officer in an Ohio facility.

Topics covered included Administration, Legal Issues, Jail Security, Human Relations, Medical Overview, Subject Control Techniques, and First Aid. The local agencies saved critical funding dollars by participating in this regional training at Washington State compared to sending officers to other areas of the state for training. The course is required under Ohio Revised Code for jail staff that have been recently employed in Ohio.

The officers participating in the training represented correctional facilities from Belmont, Monroe, Noble, Gallia, and Washington Counties. After successfully completing the academy, the officers are now eligible to take the state certification examination.
In addition to offering the Corrections Academy, WSCC also offers the Peace Officer Basic Academy (POBA). The college is currently accepting applications for POBA which begins August 16. Classes will run in the evenings Monday through Friday with some weekends and will span both fall and spring semesters, August through May. The first point of entry into the academy is passing the state-mandated physical training test. The final test opportunity will be offered on Saturday, August 7 at 9 a.m. at the Williamstown High School track.
