1. Firefighter injured while responding to west Toledo restaurant fire Sunday (wtol.com) — A Toledo firefighter was hospitalized with non-critical injuries after crews battled a Sunday morning blaze at The Breeze Bar and Grill on Monroe Street in west Toledo. The fire, contained in about 45 minutes, caused significant back-of-building damage, likely closing the restaurant for a while as utilities remain shut off and health inspectors must clear it before reopening.
   

2. Toledo soldier surprises mother after months at training camp (wtol.com) — A Toledo mother of four got an emotional surprise when her soldier son, home from training in Georgia, walked into a family dinner at a local restaurant days earlier than expected. The Hernandez family, with deep military roots, plans to spend the next couple of weeks enjoying Toledo traditions like the zoo lights and Walleye games together.
   

3. Toledo Kwanzaa House marks 60th anniversary of African-American holiday (toledoblade.com subscription) — Toledo residents can join free Kwanzaa celebrations at the Frederick Douglass Center from Dec. 29 through Jan. 1, with education hours and evening festivities each night. Organizers invite the whole community to enjoy food, fashion, and culture while learning about Kwanzaa’s seven principles and its roots in African-American history.
   

4. Ohio GOP lawmakers demand restoration of manufacturing program funding (limaohio.com) — Federal funding for Ohio’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership has been frozen, and records show CIFT of Toledo is among the organizations flagged in an ongoing audit, putting local modernization support at risk. Both Republican and Democratic members of Congress are pressuring the Commerce Department to restore funding while the review is completed, warning that manufacturers across Ohio could lose critical technical expertise and project support.
   

5. Ohio governor regrets signing sports betting bill, worries about integrity of games (13abc.com) — From Toledo, Gov. Mike DeWine says he now regrets signing Ohio’s sports betting law, citing recent scandals involving college athletes and Cleveland Guardians pitchers. He’s pressing major sports leagues and the NCAA to tighten rules on prop bets, warning that unchecked gambling could erode fans’ trust in the integrity of games Ohioans love to watch and wager on.
