What’s Up With the Bradley-Naigle Traffic Light?

It’s not in Westlake, but the traffic light and patterns at the Bradley and Naigle roads intersection has people south of the Bay Village scratching their heads.

Recently, Patch has had requests to find out what’s going at the intersection, which is just north of the railroad tracks that border Bay Village and Westlake.

“Are you able to find out about the final resolution of the intersection at Bradley and Krebs (roads) at the railroad tracks?,” one reader asked.

Krebs Road, which runs along the railroad tracks in Avon Lake, turns into Naigle Road once it crosses into Bay Village.

And from another: “What's happening at the Bradley/Krebs intersection? There has always been one stop sign on Krebs but then the lights were added and it became a three-way stop. Now it is back to a single stop sign on Krebs. Should be some good accidents now.”

The traffic patterns have gone through an array of changes including an all-way stop with the new traffic light blinking red each way, to no blinking red lights, to stop signs and the most recent: One stop sign and a second that says Bradley Road traffic does not stop at all.

Bay Village Building Director Dan Galli said the intersection at present is now the same it was before the traffic light went up, and it will remain the same for a few months.

In other words: no more changes, probably until the end of the year.

“I’m guessing it will be a few months,” Galli said about the signal going live again. “We’re waiting for the railroad to finish their work. We had tried to get the intersection open with the old equipment. Everyone thought it would work but it didn’t.”

Galli said the issue is when the lights were flashing yellow, they were not communicating with the railroad crossing signal.

“The lights were completed by spring and by June we were ready to activate (the new signal) but the railroad wasn’t ready."

The office of has been getting occasional calls, but, since the traffic lights are in Bay Village, callers are told to contact Galli with any questions.

The Naigle-Bradley intersection underwent extensive renovations in the past 18 months, to allow for the road’s widening and addition of turning lanes.

Galli said the railroad recently completed an engineering study and it now needs review. Last week he sent memos to Westlake and explaining the situation.

“We tried six weeks with stop signs, then there were stop signs with the light,” Galli added. “Sometimes when you try to overdo things it just made it more confusion.”

So until the railroad re-engineers the lights and they are active, north/south traffic on Bradley Rd. will NOT have to stop. Drivers coming off of Naigle (Krebs) Road will still have a stop sign at Bradley Road.

The city also added what most drivers have figured out: Use caution when approaching this intersection.

There will be an increased Bay Village police presence in the area until the problem is remedied.
