📰 News we're reading

1. Reading Partners encouraging Tulsans to add volunteering to 2026 resolutions (kjrh.com) — Reading Partners Tulsa is asking local residents to make tutoring Union students part of their 2026 resolutions, as the group seeks 250 new volunteers. After helping 478 students this semester, leaders say one hour a week at schools like Darnaby Elementary can dramatically boost kids’ reading skills and strengthen Tulsa’s future.

2. Tulsa's Winterfest reopens its ice skating rink following unseasonably warm weather (fox23.com) — Downtown Tulsa’s Arvest Winterfest ice rink is back open after two days of closure caused by near-80-degree temperatures that made the ice unsafe. Crews rebuilt and refroze the surface, and families are again skating beside the BOK Center as the holiday tradition continues into the first week of January.

3. Tulsa Police accuse man of shooting at utility workers with BB gun (fox23.com) — Tulsa police say a man fired a BB gun at utility workers who were trying to shut off power at a home near North Birmingham Place and East Pine Street. Officers later searched a nearby house, recovered the workers’ missing ladder and BB pellets in the attic, and arrested a suspect now held in Tulsa County Jail on assault and stolen property charges.

4. OKC, Tulsa offer free Christmas tree mulching (and free mulch) for residents (kosu.org) — Tulsa residents can drop off live Christmas trees at the city’s year-round mulch site east of the airport and pick up free mulch, with proof of residence required only for drop-off. Throughout December and January, Tulsans can also cut trees into four-foot sections and leave them by their trash bins on regular collection days, while Oklahoma City offers similar options for its residents.

5. Wrapping paper? Tinsel? Here's what you can and cannot put in your recycling bin (ktul.com) — Tulsa-area residents are getting a timely reminder from Broken Arrow about what holiday leftovers actually belong in your recycling bin and what needs to go in the trash. From which wrapping paper is acceptable to how to cut and set out your Christmas tree, the guidance can help you avoid contamination fees and keep local recycling running smoothly.
