5 Writing Workshops From Write Around Portland

Write Around Portland offers writing workshops for individuals, groups and the workplace.

PORTLAND, OR- Write Around Portland has been providing Portland with different writing workshops to hone their skills and create community among friends, aspiring writers and coworkers. Their workshops are in line with their philosophy that anyone can be a writer, and that sharing stories with one another creates change and inspires both individual and community growth.


1) Prompt at Powell's City of Books

Date: Wednesdays, Sep 28 – Dec 7 (skip Nov 23)

Location: Powell’s City of Books, Downtown Portland

2) Building Worlds and People: Using Sci Fi Techniques in any genre with Wendy Wagner

This workshop is a special one time option, and will fill up quickly, so be sure to register early. While science fiction writing might intimidate some aspiring authors who are used to writing in a more traditional fiction style, the same rules apply. The settings might be filled with fantasy, but the characters remain dynamic. This workshop is hands-on, and the skills acquired will be useful for writers who work in any genre.

3) Writing Workshops at Hotlip's Pizza

Designed for both the new and experienced writer, the Hotlip's Pizza workshop is a favorite among the younger community in Portland.

When: 3rd Thursdays and final Sundays of each month, 9-11 a.m.

Location: HOTLIPS Pizza, 2211 SE Hawthorne Blvd. on the TriMet #14 bus line.

Fee: $10-$30 sliding scale, per workshop. Please bring a journal or notebook and a favorite pen. Register online now.


4) Workplace Writing Workshops

Options are scalable based on the duration of the workshop, available funds, and the type of organization that is requesting a workshop. There is a 2-hour and all day option for either 18 or 36 participants. Price can fluctuate depending on the kind of organization; nonprofits for example, can get a significant discount.

5) Traditional Writing Workshops

Write Around Portland has partnered with over 200 organizations with their traditional Writing Workshops since 1999. If you're interested in hosting a traditional writing workshop at you can explore the list of Previous Agency Partners.

Write Around Portland also holds different levels of workshops depending on experience level, and longevity of participation. There is an intermediate level for intermediate writers who have attended 2-3 workshops. This is called "Write On: Returning Writers." These open workshops are held for individuals who come from a lower socioeconomic background, and are free to participate.
