Petitioners said they submitted 3,500 signatures to the Secretary of State for ballot consideration.

OREGON -- An effort to ban assault weapons in the state of Oregon made headway this week. Petitioners said the submitted 3,500 signatures to the Secretary of State for verification, according to the Statesman Journal.
If the signatures prove to be from registered voters, the initiative will be on the November ballot for voters' consideration.
The Statesman Journal said if voters approve of the measure, the state would "ban the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines."

"It would require current gun owners to do one of the following with applicable firearms or high-capacity magazines: register them with the state, sell them to a registered dealer, remove them from the state, render them inoperable or surrender them to law enforcement," the newspaper reported.
Petitioners made their announcement just two days after tens of thousands of people held rallies across the country demanding lawmakers pass more gun control laws. The rally, called "March for Our Lives," was spearheaded by survivors of the Parkland, Florida school shooting that killed 17 people.
