📰 News we're reading

1. Police identify woman fatally stabbed in SE Portland Saturday; husband arrested as suspect (katu.com) — Portland police have identified 33-year-old Jessica Host-Norwest as the woman fatally stabbed Saturday in Southeast Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood, and have arrested her husband, 41-year-old Jason A. Norwest, as a suspect. Investigators are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Portland Police Bureau’s homicide unit and reference case number 25-347614.

2. Suspect in October SE Portland shooting arrested (kptv.com) — Portland police have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with an October shooting near Southeast 127th Avenue and Stark Street that seriously injured another man. Investigators say he was taken into custody after a search warrant at his Northeast Portland home turned up a firearm, and they’re still seeking additional information from anyone who may have seen or heard something that morning.

3. Portland traffic deaths on track to drop to lowest level in years, city says (opb.org) — Portland traffic deaths are projected to hit their lowest level since before the pandemic, with 39 fatalities recorded through Dec. 22. City leaders credit Vision Zero investments, lower speeds, and safety cameras, while warning that funding gaps and a possible statewide tax referendum could affect future road safety improvements.

4. Dozens temporarily forced out of North Portland apartment complex before Christmas. Here's why (koin.com) — Dozens of residents at the Argyle low-income apartments in North Portland’s Kenton neighborhood were abruptly told to leave for at least a week so the complex can be deep-cleaned after drug residue was found. Tenants, many exiting homelessness, are staying in motels with vouchers but say moving belongings, losing kitchen access, and disrupted holiday plans are creating financial and emotional strain.

5. Portland Fire launches online tool to report illegal fireworks on New Year's Eve (kgw.com) — Portland Fire & Rescue is urging residents to skip personal fireworks this New Year’s Eve and instead use a new online tool or 311 to report illegal use. Officials say the citywide ban and reporting form have already cut 911 calls and improved response times, and they’re again emphasizing that 911 should only be used for true emergencies. A professional drone show downtown offers a legal alternative.
