Learn to Hunt and Fish With Oregon Department of Fishing and Wildlife

Do you belong in the outdoors? Have you always wanted to learn to hunt, but never had the chance to learn? ODFW is the solution.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife hosts different workshops throughout the year to help keep the people in Oregon informed and educated about the environment. They also offer workshops that focus on teaching outdoor skills, such as fishing and hunting.

The workshops available are popular with Oregon outdoor enthusiasts, and they become full quickly.

"Most of our workshops fill up and we have waiting lists. Our workshops handle between 16-30 people on average depending on what we are doing and where we are doing it. We have had over 40 people on a waiting list before," said Mark Newell, Outdoor Skills Education Coordinator with the Oregon Department of Fishing and Wildlife.

Newell is the facilitator for all of the different workshops, regardless of their subject matter.

"The only constant in the workshops is me. We rely heavily on volunteers. Volunteers that know how to clam might not know anything about big game hunting and visa-versa. Our volunteer instructors are some of the most knowledgeable people in the state, they are professional, friendly, highly aware of safety, and a lot of fun to be around and work with," said Newell.

When asked if he was partial to any particular ODFW event, Newell's own animals influenced his choices.

"I have two personal favorites but that is because I own dogs and I bird hunt with them. All of our events are really top quality. My two favorites are the pheasant hunts we do, and the dog training workshop we put on. The clamming workshop is a close third. But we have workshops in: Steelhead Fishing, Salmon Fishing, Crabbing, In-Shore Marine Fishing, Small Game Hunting, Pheasant Hunting, Shotgun Skills, Fishing and Floating, Big Game Hunting, Field Dressing, Waterfowl Hunting, Using a GPS and Maps, Survival, Shelter Building, Cooking with a Dutch Oven," said Newell.
