LightsOut Portland, Save Energy and Save Lives

The Audubon Society of Portland encourages Portlanders to turn off their non-essential lights to raise awareness about light pollution.

The Audubon Society of Portland launches its LightsOut initiative on September 30th. The purpose of the initiative is to raise awareness about light pollution, which is a problem for Portland's bird population during migration season.

“We have a love affair with city lights, but we are beginning to understand that excessive nighttime lighting has serious unintended consequences,” said Mary Coolidge of Audubon Society of Portland.

Audubon put together a list for members of the Portland community who are interested in getting involved with LightsOut.

  1. Turn off all non-essential or unnecessary lights from dusk to dawn
  2. Conduct an audit of outdoor lighting at your home or business
  3. Make an effort to reduce your nighttime light usage during bird migration periods
  4. Continue to support public policies that minimize light pollution

Residents and business owners can both participate in LightsOut Portland. Participation is voluntary but highly encouraged. If you are a local business owner, building manager, tenant or employee, and you're interested in participating, simply complete the sign up form.

Some of the suggested LightsOut tasks include turning off rooftop lighting, pulling blinds and drapes, scheduling daytime instead of nighttime cleaning crews and minimizing the use of decorative or motion lighting.

There are several ways that local Portland residents can reduce bird strikes at home. The list is long and comprehensive, if you're interested in tackling a DIY project, bird-proofing your house during LightOut might be the perfect option.
