Here are the top three stories today in Portland:
- Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has unveiled a $7.1 billion budget proposal for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. The proposal reflects the city's changing economic environment, with revenue streams like the American Rescue Plan Act and high tax revenue from pandemic-era businesses drying up. The proposed budget is 1 percent smaller than last year's figures, with revenue decreases — including a 5 percent drop in recreational cannabis tax dollars —limiting funding options. (Oregon Public Broadcasting)
- Portland's annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta continues through Sunday, May 7 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The event will feature traditional Mexican music, dance performances, and delicious food from local vendors. Attendees can also enjoy carnival rides, children's activities, and even amateur boxing throughout the weekend. (Travel Portland)
- The City of Portland has acquired a 0.7-acre property which will help create a continuous, protected stream corridor for endangered salmon in the city. The Crystal Springs Creek property includes a 240-foot section of the ecologically significant waterway designated by the city as a salmon sanctuary, supporting documented populations of 16 species of fish. This acquisition aims to preserve the creek as well as close gaps between large protected green spaces. (750 KXL)
