Here are the top three stories today in Portland:

  1. Multnomah County Elections is reminding voters to register before the voter registration deadline of Tuesday, Apr. 25 for the May 16 Special District Election. More than 30 Official Ballot Drop Sites are available, but the construction of some libraries will impact the location of five drop sites. The registration deadline can be met through online registration, paper registration cards available in multiple locations, or in-person registration at the Duniway-Lovejoy Elections Building. (Multnomah County)
  2. Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue reported that a garage fire caused four individuals to be displaced from their home in Cedar Hills on Sunday afternoon. The fire was reported around 3:00 p.m. on the 2200 block of Southwest Cedar Hills Boulevard and was mostly confined to the garage, with no injuries reported, and the fire investigator is looking into the cause of the fire. A neighbor said they smelled and saw the thick black smoke several blocks away from the scene. (Fox 12 Oregon)
  3. Kevin Dahlgren, a drug counselor in the Portland area, has been helping people on the streets for 28 years and believes that cities and social service agencies are enabling homelessness instead of empowering individuals to reach their fullest potential. He thinks that the approach to homelessness needs to change in Oregon and that funding alone is not the solution. He believes that outreach teams and trust-building within the homeless community are necessary, as well as addressing drug and mental health issues. (KOIN.com)
