Here are the top three stories today in Portland:
- Personal finance website WalletHub released a new report on Monday that listed Portland as the sixth healthiest city in the U.S. The study compared 43 wellness-related factors in more than 180 of the most-populated U.S. cities, and Portland ranked particularly high in the categories of healthy restaurants and the total dimension of green spaces in the city. On the list, San Francisco took first place and Seattle took second; Portland ranked right below fifth-place Salt Lake City and above seventh-place Washington, DC. (KOIN.com)
- Multnomah County's Behavioral Health Resource Center in downtown Portland abruptly closed on Thursday for the following two weeks in order to improve the facility's security measures and train staff. The drop-in day center opened four months ago and offers resources such as showers, bathrooms, laundry, and mental health resources for people experiencing homelessness. The center will be closed until Apr. 17. (OregonLive)
- California-based Urban Alchemy, a non-profit that runs several homeless shelters located in California and Texas, recently talked about its plans for the upcoming planned homeless campsite that it will be operating here in Portland. Mayor Ted Wheeler announced that the location of the first of the city's planned six mass-sanctioned sites is planned for Southeast Gideon Street in the Brooklyn Neighborhood, and Urban Alchemy is partnering with Portland to run the site. Urban Alchemy's Chief of Governmental and Community Affairs Kirkpatrick Tyler said that the non-profit is planning to work with those who live and own businesses within the surrounding community to learn how to best integrate the sites into the neighborhood.
