Portland Opera To Go; 'Hansel and Gretel' Goes Portable

Portland Opera To Go, the operas touring company, revs up for its Northwest tour of 'Hansel and Gretel'

The Porland Opera's touring company, Portland Opera To Go, began its run of 'Hansel and Gretel' September 26. The production is a 50 minute, family-friendly adaption by Englebert Humperdinck.

"We've toured throughout Oregon and southwest Washington," said Alexis Hamilton, Director of Education and Outreach for the Portland Opera. "The tour that will take 12 weeks. It's designed for children in kindergarten through 6th grade."

Portland Opera To Go productions feature an arts integrated curriculum, which use the opera presentation as a catalyst for teaching across subjects. The curriculum is aligned with the CommonCore Standards as adopted by Oregon in 2010 and fully implemented in 2014.

"Our performances are fully staged, we have a pianist and a tour manager that travels with the cast; we are our own roadies," said Hamilton.

The Portland Opera To Go will have a performance of 'Hansel and Gretel' at the Portland Performing Arts Center in the Rotunda of the Antoinette Hatfield Hall, located at 1100 SW Broadway. There will be a 'brown bag' performance on November 14, which will be free.

"We love inviting people into our own studio space," said Hamilton. The space she is referring to, Hampton Opera Center, will hold two showings of 'Hansel and Gretel' on December 10th and December 17th. You can purchase tickets by contacting the Portland Opera Box office at 503-241-1802.
