More Portland Area School Districts Shift To Remote Learning

Franklin High School and Tubman Middle School are the two latest to switch to remote learning.

PORTLAND, OR — Add two more Portland schools to the list of those that are switching to remote learning. Portland Public Schools announced Thursday that Jefferson High School and Tubman Middle School will be switching to remote learning for at least next week.

Meanwhile, Gresham-Barlow, Reynolds, and North Clackamas school district all announced that they would be shifting to remote learning.

All districts voiced a reason along the lines of Portland which cited a "significant increase in the number of COVID-related absences for both students and staff."

The two schools will begin remote learning on Tuesday because Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a school holiday.

These are the seventh and eighth schools in the Portland Public Schools district to switch to remote learning since the omicron-driven COVID-19 surge took hold in the state.

The district released more information for both schools:

Franklin High School:

  • During temporary distance learning, a limited number of in-person extracurricular activities will take place including Portland Interscholastic League (PIL) athletics and performing arts. More information will be shared with families by the school.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be offered daily for pickup while students are in temporary distance learning. Families can pick up meals every day from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Franklin.

Tubman Middle School:

  • During temporary distance learning, a limited number of in-person extracurricular activities will take place at Tubman. More information will be provided by the school.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be offered daily for pickup while students are in temporary distance learning. Families can pick up meals every day from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Tubman.
  • This year, students have been issued a PPS Chromebook as part of the District’s 1:1 Chromebook Take Home Initiative. The PPS technical support desk will be available to families and students via support@pps.net or 503-916-3375
