Shaw was convicted of killing Jay Rickbell in July 1991 and Todd Rudiger and Donna Ferguson the following year. He was convicted of raping a woman in 1995.

Shaw faced the death penalty at his trial in 2006, but the jury couldn't come to a unanimous decision, which, unlike what was needed for criminal convictions, was required at the time.
