Portland Area Storm Leaves More Than 25,000 Left Without Power

PGE said that more than 20,000 customers were affected by power outages that resulted from the major storm that moved through the region.

PORTLAND, OR — More than 25,000 customers of Portland General Electric were left power on Sunday. That, along with heavy rain and heavy winds, made the tri-county region a weather-battered place.

From downed trees and downed power lines to flooded street and sewer backups, areas from Oregon City and Wilsonville to Lake Oswego, Portland, Hillsboro, and Gresham all experienced problems.

The system moving through is part of what the National Weather Service calls a "bomb cyclone" moving up the coast. With wind gusts clocked at nearly 60 mph the storm wreaked havoc.

As of 2:30 p.m., PGE reported more than 100 separate 100 outages each in Hillsboro, Beaverton, Gresham, Lake Oswego, and Oregon City. There were 12 separate outages in Portland and 21 in Wilsonville.

Pacific Power reported more than 4,000 customers without power in Portland.

While the sun made an appearance in mid-midafternoon, forecasters say that there could be more problems ahead with wind gusts of 70 mph and pea-sized hail possible.

In Hillsboro, there were reports of downed trees, one hitting a car, and a greenhouse at Eastwood Elementary School being destroyed by the high winds.

Forecasters say that the high winds and rain were expected to last through the night.
