PORTLAND, OR — There are 63 names on the list. More than five-dozen people who were killed on the streets of Portland in 2021.

From Daniel Martinez-Vidals, a 19-year-old killed on New Year's Day at Division and 112th to Jaimie Smith, a 23-year-old killed on Christmas Day at North Interstate and Mississippi, it is a list that shows Portland's Vision Zero Program still has a way to go before being successful.

PBOT said they recognize the seriousness of the steps back.

"Some of these deaths feel hauntingly familiar, as they follow patterns and trends from before the pandemic," the bureau says in the report. "Others feel different because the Covid-19 pandemic, and its tremendous impact on American life, is also a contributing factor to the rise in traffic deaths.

"This is a new and unexpected circumstance requiring our focus and attention."
