Portland-Area Snow Brings School Delays And Closures, Power Outages

More than 4o,000 people are without power, schools are opening late, some are closed, trees are down, and roads are closed. Snow in April.

PORTLAND, OR — Until Monday, the latest measurable snow in the Portland-region had been on April 1. That record was set in 1935, five years before the National Weather Service started keeping records here..

It was April 11, there was at least an inch of snow throughout the region and a new record as been set..

With the snow, there are power outages, school delays, limbs down, and road closures.

"Heavy, wet snow is accumulating to the point where we are getting isolated reports of tree damage (i.e. broken limbs, etc). This may result in dangerous downed power lines and power outages," the weather service said.

Portland General Electric and Pacific Power report a combined more than 40,000 customers without power.

"We’re aware of the power outage in Portland impacting 6,326 customers," Pacific Power tweeted. "The cause is weather related w/reports of trees on lines & lines down. Crews have been dispatched to repair. We are working to restore your power as quickly as possible."

School districts with 2 hour delays include Beaverton, Hillsboro, and Lake Oswego.

Portland, Oregon City, West Linn-Wilsonville, and Gresham-Barlow have closed for the day.

ODOT reports that a fallen tree on Highway 26 by the Oregon Zoo exit has closed the road. Downed trees by the St. Johns Bridge has also closed the road. Highway 26 was closed for several hours.

Portland Bureau of Transportation tweeted out six additional road closures:

  • North Willamette at Hodge
  • SW 14th and Harrison
  • SW 18th and Columbia
  • NW Skyline Blvd is closed between West Burnside & Cornell
  • NW Germantown Road is closed between Skyline & Bridge Ave
  • NW Skyline Blvd is closed between Newberry & Germantown
