Abington Board Honors Luker

Though it was about two months late, Abington Commissioner Wayne Luker didn’t seem to mind.

The Abington Board of Commissioners on Thursday honored commissioner and vice president Wayne Luker for his role in organizing the township’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. event at the high school — which just had its 28tth year.

Abington Director of Planning and Code Enforcement Larry Matteo said the intention was to honor Luker at January’s MLK ceremony, but not everyone could attend it because President Barack Obama was being sworn in the same day. 

“He puts everything together  ... It’s been a real honor working with this young man,” Matteo said. “[His work] benefits us tremendously. He works very long and hard, and it’s been a real pleasure.”

Luker thanked his family, who he said moved to the township 21 years ago. Each commissioner thanked Luker for his service to the township at the end of the meeting.
