Cheltenham Art Center Announces Awards

The art center's 70th Annual Awards Show runs through May 11.

Artists and spectators gathered Sunday afternoon at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts for its 70th Annual Awards Show.

About 50 pieces of media are on display; most of them are paintings. The show’s juror is Joan Wadleigh Curran, painter, guest artist and lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania.

To jury a painting exhibition is an exciting and daunting experience. I love the process of looking. It is an opportunity to see a variety of images and ideas. As a practicing artist, I take the responsibility seriously …

I believe it is the juror’s duty to give careful, nuanced attention to each work … My charge is to try to recognize a singular voice, an unusual way of looking at the world or a compelling idea represented in the paintings before me.

The awards:

  • Juror’s Award, Elizabeth Heller for “Still Life With Dahlias”  
  • Cheltenham Center for the Arts Award, Eleanor Day for “Summer Morning”
  • Alma Finestone Memorial Award, Lauren Rinaldi for “Samskaras
  • Emanual Weiss Memorial Award, Edwina Brennan for "Homage to Gorky" 
  • Irving Portner Memorial Award, Robert Small for “Jumtoutamiskin”
  • Hitoshi Nakazaato Award, Rosalind Reichstein for “The Hills Alive”

The show runs through May 11 and gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Cheltenham Center for the Arts is located at 439 Ashbourne Road, Cheltenham.
